Accessing Our Services

Almost all the services ADEC provides are governed by a state agency, which determines eligibility for services and controls the admissions process to our services. The following information describes the types of ADEC services and how to start to the process of accessing those services.

First Steps (children 3 and under)

Parents of children under the age of three must call the Systems Point of Entry (SPOE) office at 574-293-2813. An admissions service coordinator will make an appointment to visit you at your home to explain and start the process to determine if your child is eligible. Once determined eligible parents may choose ADEC as a provider of services from a list of qualified provides.

Employment Services

Individuals with disabilities wanting help getting or keeping a job need to call the local office of the Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services. In Elkhart 293-2771 and in St. Joseph County 574-232-4861. You need to ask for an appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor to start the process to see if you are eligible for services. Once determined eligible clients can choose ADEC to work with them from a list of qualified providers.

Supervised Group Living (group homes), Supported Living and Day Services

Family members seeking any of these services must call the Indiana Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Office in South Bend at 574-232-1412. State that you want to apply for services for your family member and ask for an appointment to begin the eligibility process. Once found eligible family members can select ADEC as their service provider from a list of qualified providers.

Vision Loss

Persons who are experiencing vision loss who are still employed or who want to be employed will need to call the Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Office in their community (in Elkhart County 574-293-2771 in St. Joseph County 574-232-4861. Ask for an appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to begin the process to determine if you are eligible for their services. Once determined eligible the client may choose ADEC to provide these specialized services to them.

Persons age 55 and older not interested in employment but who are experiencing vision loss, who live in Elkhart, St. Joseph, LaPorte, Marshall or Kosciusko counties should call ADEC’s Visual Impairment Program at 574-848-7451. A teacher will make an appointment to come to your home to determine if you qualify for these services.

Computer Access Training

Persons with any type of disabling condition desiring to develop computer skills related to getting or keeping a job will need to call the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. (in Elkhart County 574-293-2771 in St. Joseph County 574-232-4861.) Ask for an appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to begin the process to determine if you are eligible for their services. Once determined eligible the client may choose ADEC to provide these specialized services to them.

Support Services Waiver Respite

To be eligible for these service families must already be on the Support Services Waiver and have a case manager with this service. The family’s case manager should be notified that respite services are requested. The case manager is the person who is to call the Director of Children/Family Services at ADEC to secure arrangements for respite services for the family. ADEC is responsible for training the respite provider.

Support Services Case Management

Interested families must call the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Office in South Bend at 574-232-1412 and ask for an application for the Support Services Waiver. The family will be asked to then select a case manager and the case manager helps the family through the application process.

Respite Service

Families need to call the ADEC Children and Family Services Director at 574-848-7451 and ask that an application for respite services be completed. The ADEC Children’s director will see that proper forms are done and arrange for funds to be paid to the respite provider. The family is responsible for finding the respite provider. ADEC is responsible for training the provider.
